Starshine

Brightness falling,
Ancient light of distant galaxies
Crashing relentlessly,
A catastrophe aeons to unfurl;
Worlds bathed in brilliance
Cast by a thousand suns
Racing to their doom;
Millions of years, billions,
A cosmic blink while
Crawling from the murk,
Lifting eyes to the heavens,
Civilizations rise, empires fall,
Whole species fade away;
Still the novae explode,
Spinning gas and dust into
The shadow of the nebula
So the lovers may park and kiss
And hold each other under
A clear, starry night.

  1. I love watching stars at night; back at home I would spend hours sitting under sky watching these heavenly bodies. This poem is so well – expressed! I am starting to like your poems better than your prose (confused now) lol

  2. As always, you did a monumental job with the imagery. In addition, I’ve never read a surprise ending this well done in a poem.

    This piece reminded me a bit of Arthur Clarke’s “The Star”. While reading it the music from disc one of Yes’ Tales from Topographic Oceans started running through my head. I never thought I’d refer to those two works in the same paragraph.

    Either you have a broad range of influences or you’re a very creative artist. I’m thinking it’s probably some combination of the two.
